Whether you like it or not, you probably have a business listing in Google Places, Bing Business Portal, and Yahoo Local. These listings were pulled from Yellow Pages and many other third-party resources. If you have not checked your listing, you may be in for a surprise. Go into Google Maps and search for your business as a potential client might search. For example, "real estate agent, Bethesda, MD". Did your listing show up dead last on the list? Have they listed an outdated phone number or incorrect street address? It makes sense to take control of your listing NOW!
The good news is that all of these listings are FREE. The bad news is that unless you claim your listing and control the information on it, the listing may be doing more harm than good. Claiming your listing is a very simple process with each of these major search engines and you can find the proper place to start with these steps:
- When you've found your listing on Google Maps, click on "more info" just to the right of your company name. This opens a popup and you'll see the word "edit" among the choices under "Get Directions". Click on "edit" and a second popup appears with a section entitled "Edit". There you will see the question, "Are you the owner?" Click on "Claim Your Business." and follow the steps.
- You may also go to Google Places and check to see if you have a listing by entering your phone number.
- Go to Bing Maps and search for your business just as you did with Google Maps. When you find your listing, you'll see "Change your business listing" as an option to click under your directory information. Follow the steps to complete your updates.
- Go to Yahoo Maps and search for your business as you did with Google Maps. When you find your listing, next to "Business Overview" you will see a tab to "Add Info". Click here and sign into Yahoo to continue
The impact your real estate business listing has on your rank with search engines and your potential clients is huge, and the only cost is your time!! Fill in the information completely and include photos and videos where you can. When filling in categories or products, select words that potential clients would likely use to search for you.
There are other free business listings on the web such as Yelp, Foursquare, and Local. Each listing you create enhances your search results, and you may want to explore these at your leisure. HOWEVER, claiming your listings on the three search engines above is critical.
