If you had to fill out a survey for 2010, would you check off the year as:
__ Great, couldn't have been better!
__ Good, but there was room for improvement!
__ O brother, thank God it is 2011!
You may want 2011 to hold more of the good successes you had in 2010 or you may want it to be much better. How can you make this happen?
When you try to answer that question, you must realize that if you tend to go day to day, you may not be able to figure out how it to replicate success (or create success if it didn't happen last year.) You need to know where you were and how you got to where you are. This means you needed a plan. If you were successful and had no plan, your success was random. Unless lightning hits repeatedly, you have nothing to build on. If you had a plan and you weren't successful, that means you have something to review and improve upon - or junk and build a new one!
A good way to start building a plan is to write your goals and review them daily. Once you see your goals, you can devise the strategies you need to get there. You can build in measures for success or failure as well as timelines. When you see it all on paper, you can more easily see what creative steps you need to take to reach the goals.
With the plan in handle, you may realize that you have so much on your plate that it was easier to dig in than take time to plan. Though this approach may take you through the day, it is not efficient. If you pan, you may find one of two things.
1. You are losing time because you are not organized. If you planned better, you might be able to complete your work in less time.
2. You have too much work, even if you are very organized, so you need to delegate some tasks out to free up your time for the most important aspects of your business.
